Ann really wanted to run this one. In fact, she's the one that talked me into paying extra for the whole BRIN series. But her 99 year old father fell and broke his hip on Thursday. He got through the surgery fine but this morning he started having difficultly breathing and they found fluid in his lungs. When we went up to see him they had him on oxygen and his didn't look good. But after a hour of visiting his color returned and he was sitting up in bed. Thirty minutes later, as we were leaving the house for the race, Ann got a call that he had taken a bad turn. She decided to head to the hospital. I wanted to go as well but she said she'd feel guilty if I missed the BRIN medal. Now I think she really knew how bad he was and just wanted to spare me.

So I ran and it did clear my head. I remembered the last thing he said to me. Even in his condition he insisted on shaking my hand as he said, "Its always good when you visit." That was a pretty good way to leave things.

After I got home I learned the rest of the story. The doctor gave him morphine for the pain and told Ann it would be hours before the end. He no sooner got to the door than the nurse callled him back. Mel passed before the doctor got to the bed. It was 4:07 PM, the exact time I started my run.

No one can ever convince me that was a coincidence. I think its a sign that there is always another race.

Song of the day: "Daddy Dream" by Nils Lofgren off his sensational 1983 album "Wonderland". For 2 reasons.
1. Today is the 22nd anniversary of Nils' Ranch Bowl gig, and "Daddy Dream" was the kick off song that night.
2. Nils is currently working on his new album with bassist Kevin McCormick and drummer Andy Newmark! YAY!!!! The same power trio that was the core of Nils' "Wonderland" and "Silver Lining" albums. No better news for a Nils fan!!! :) :) :)
