Let's just say that this was the worst race that I have ever run. The temperature at the start was closer to 70º when we started. I had no idea that the humidity (about 88%) and temperature were going to take such a toll on my body. I knew at the half that I wasn't doing so good, and I don't know when I completely took a dive, but somewhere around 18-20, I was wondering if I was even going to make it to the finish. I walked through the water stations and a few other places and stretched a few times. My watch didn't store my splits, so I didn't get to see when I really lost it. At the end, Meleia and I both ended up in the medical tent. Another first for me. I thought I was going to be okay, but I couldn't even stand up without my body wanting to black out. So, finally, someone wheeled me to the medical tent and I laid on a cot with my legs up. Only after I ate some chips and drank more gatorade was I able to stand without blacking out. They mentioned something to me about low blood sugar.

I am really glad I finished this race! I have a newfound respect for the distance and for so many people who do finish this race. I was not the only person who had a hard race. About everybody we talked to said they finished about a half hour slower.

So happy for Meleia and Jen that they finished their first marathon. Not the best marathon to run for the 1st time, but they did it!

tldr -> It was hot. Black flags at mile 22. I survived.

I wasn't really sure that I was in PR shape. The last few months I've had some niggles resulting in less mileage than planned. But, I thought I was in OK shape. Burke on the other hand had a great training cycle and I was really excited to see him do well. My plan was to go out and stay with him for as long as I could then wish him well on the way to a PR.
It was warm at the start. Announced 68 degrees. And it felt warm. Within the first two miles we started getting the breeze off the lake and it helped a bunch. Through mile 10 everything was going pretty well. Then it seemed like we lost that breeze off the lake, and the forecasted clouds never showed up. I started to bake and about mile 11.5 I dropped back and told Burke I'd see him at the finish line. By mile 12 I wasn't feeling really well and made a quick pit stop. Again at 13. After that I felt like I could still salvage something under 3:50. But my heart rate started spiking and I had to slow way down. I ran across Linny and she was head down marching right along. Said hello, but had to drop back. Unfortunately I caught up to Burke again around 16. Then dropped back, then caught up again, rinse, repeat until about 22.5. It was death march for me. I could have been in better shape, but I survived and will live to run another (hopefully the weather will be better the next time!).

Well that was a big pile of so terrible. :/

Dehydrated and pathetic by mile 13. I just could not get enough water. I have new respect for a marathon. It was freaking ass hard. It put me in my place that's for sure.

Thank the Lord for Theresa, Tim, Meleia, and mostly, my Matt (who ran a good race, btw). I would still be crying if it wasn't for them.

I just had Burger King, if that tells you where my frame of mind is. Frick.

Such a hot but awesome day on the trails. The volunteers make this race so awesome. Got an ice water shower from Kaci and Miguel at mile 22 which saved me and kept me going. Had assistance immediately at ever aid station. Love the Goatz!

Marathon 5 is in the books! Race recap: 5:30 alarm. The sun was already up, who knew? Guess it decided to get up early too. 6:15 shuttle. Are we there yet? Are we there yet?? ARE WE THERE YET? 7:05 we are there. 7:20 found John and Linny pre-race! 7:45 gun goes off. 72 degrees, seems a little warm. Oh, it's 158 in Omaha today? This isn't so bad. Mile 1: don't go out too fast. Do not go out too fast. 8:24. I'll take it. Mile 3.5 first glimpse of Lake Superior. It's a little foggy, but beautiful! Mile 5: according to a sign, despite being able to run until the treadmill gets tired Chuck Norris has never run a marathon. Hmm. Mile 6.5: a better view of the lake. My vacation home will definitely be on the water. Someday. Mile 7: Gu stop! Mile 9: pretty happy with my pace so far. We'll see how long I can hold it. Mile 11: Chuck Norris has still never run a marathon. Mile 13.1: halfway! More Gu. Mile 15: can't stop thinking about the energizer bunny. It keeps going and going and going... Mile 16.3, under 10 to go. Why does my watch say I've run an extra .16 miles so far? Gotta fix that. Mile 18: I think I've hit every water/Powerade stop so far. Good thing too, it's warm. Mile 20: if I can run the next 10k under an hour I'll PR. Let's do it! Mile 21: 8:38. Awesome. Mile 21.1: there's the dreaded wall. Happy it waited this long to hit. Mile 22: a little light headed when I run. A lot of walking is occurring. Mile 23: starting to cramp a little. More walking. Mile 24: did Chuck just pass me? Crap. I think he was running backwards and on his hands too. Mile 25: is this what death feels like? I think I saw a reaper following me. Finished in 4:10.57. Couldn't compete with the sun. Awesome race though, well run and a great course. Now point me to the beer!
