Didn't sleep a wink last night. Got up around 330 and putzed around. Did 30 min of weights and core and was at the pool when it opened at 5. 40 laps in a washing machine due to early H2O aerobics. Hurried shower and then quick to work.

Very sore from my 200s yesterday. Those of us lingering in our 30s take longer to recover than younger folk.

Happy HumpDay. It's beautiful out.

I was deeply saddened to learn of the death of Guy Clark yesterday. Guy was 74, a heartfelt songwriter, artist and a very kind man. I have all his albums, but that's just for starters. Guy was also a luthier, that is, he built his own guitars. A guitar is not something that can be thrown together...it takes careful patience and skill to get the right tone and feel. Guy took that same approach to his songs. He was very deliberate about each word and the overall theme, ironically without sounding forced. He never gave away the entire message, he subtlety left holes and space for the listener. My personal opinion is that Guy Clark as a lyricist was on a level with Bob Dylan. Those of you who look at my song of the day picks know that I love a wide variety of music. Among all these artists with many multitudes of styles, Guy Clark is my 4th favorite artist of all time.

His death leaves me gutted on a personal level as well. I was blessed to have seen Guy perform several times and had met him a few of these times. The picture today of Guy and myself was taken before his show at the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago on November 29, 2002. He was always pleasant with myself and his fans. He even honored a request I had of him playing his song, "Immigrant Eyes".

That song leads to a connection I feel between Guy and my father. "Immigrant Eyes" was about the "turn of the century pilgrims" who sailed to New York's Ellis Island to America from Europe in the early 1900's. My dad's parents were part of this movement, with a strong work ethic and dreams of a good and fruitful life. I played that song for my dad and he was moved. My dad also had me perform my version of it for family gatherings and reunions because he thought it was important and needed to be heard.

Guy Clark and my dad were so alike on many levels. My dad never did anything half-assed. Neither did Guy. Both took deep care for their work, and pride in it, without a hint of arrogance. Both loved to laugh and enjoy life and family. And--believe it or not--both shared a birthday of November 6th.

On the occasion of his death, I will point out that Guy Clark wrote different accounts on his own mortality in his own inimitable style. In "Homegrown Tomatoes", he wittingly pleads, "When I die, don't bury me/In a box in a cemetery/Out in a garden would be much better/Then I could be pushin' up homegrown tomatoes". But in "Red River", he states "Susanna, oh Susanna, when it comes my time/Please bury me south of that Red River line". Important notes: Susanna was Guy's beloved wife (who died 4 years ago), and the Red River separates Oklahoma to the north and Texas to the south. Guy was born in the small West Texas town of Monahans, and although he lived much of his professional life in Nashville (where the work and connections were as a songwriter), he was Texas TO THE BONE.

Song of the day: Randall Knife by Guy Clark.
For me, this is THE crown jewel of Guy's songs in a lifetime of exceptional songs. About his own father. Spoken more than sung in a highly personal delivery and accompanied by longtime friend, Verlon Thompson. Rest in peace, Guy.
  • WILLLINDGREN WILLLINDGREN I just knew you had him somewhere near the top of your lists Dan. I've been searching my own feelings with his loss and your words brought me some peace and a smile. Thanks for that. From "Cold Dog Soup", he rhymes orange with Rosalie, brilliant.
